Injection Moulding
This is the most commonly used plastic moulding process for making parts from thermoplastic and thermosettingplastic materials. Plastic is placed into a heated chamberand melted. Then the melted plastic is injected througha nozzle into the mould cavity and once it is full, constantpressure is applied to allow for material shrinkage. Theplastic then cools and hardens in the mould. To reduce therisk of weak spots using this process, the part to be mademust have its thickness kept uniform throughout. Most OEand aftermarket plastic fairing kits are made like this.
 

Compression Moulding

This is a high-volume, high pressure moulding method andis a lot cheaper than injection moulding. Not much materialis wasted: good for working with expensive materials. Theplastic (generally preheated) is put into a heated metalmould cavity and pressure is applied (normally via ahydraulic ram) to force the plastic into contact with all ofthe mould’s areas. Heat and pressure are maintained untilthe plastic cures. One of the most common methods is
sheet moulding compound (SMC), where the material isusually cut to conform to the mould’s surface area and laid in sheets into the mould.
