Michael Tan paints Kampung life like you've never seen it before". Malaysian artist Michael Tan is truly the quintessential self-taught artist. Without the opportunity to go to art school, Michael experimented extensively in his art and makes it on sheer grit and talent.
A dead give-away to a Michael Tan painting - apart from the signature of course - is the cat. Michael always puts in a cat not just because he likes them but because he feels that cats identify so well with the folkish genre of his pain-tings. And in a manner as deft and surreptitious as his cats, Michael has pussy-footed his way into the Singapore art scene. Michael's works are richly-detailed and gloriously coloured, with most of the themes set in the realm of rusticity. The buyers are discerning collectors who, unbothered by the relative obscurity of the artist, pay top dollars for the fastidiously executed paintings.
Michael, who is in his early 40s, produces on the average two paintings a month. He scrutinizes his subjects with the eye of a microbiologist, then gives a glittering brocade-like quality to the minutiae of kampung life - an explanation for his lack of prolificacy.
However, Michael's fondness for stylised human figures; "still" formal composition; flat colors and abstract; shapely receding perspectives and a certain unsettling mood to his paintings, betray traces of his artistic roots.
Michael's works depict the culture and spirit of the Malay kampung, which continues to enthrall him with its earthiness simplicity and harmony. The artist counts many Malays among his circle of friends. And while his paintings are hot in Singapore, none of his works are readily available in Malaysia. 8.2 If there are many creases, please carefully use the Iron With some water to Smooth the canvas.
8.3 There might be some paint on the sides ,which will be left at the back after stretching.Please consider twice before buying that u can accept it or not.
