How To Install a Cable TV Outlet With Coax?
- Installing a television receptacle in the wall will make a big improvement in the appearance of the room and it can be done in less than an hour for only a few dollars worth of materials. What a difference it will make when the television cable is removed from the floor and placed behind the wall
Instructions:
- Measure the height of the electrical outlets in the room. To maintain good appearance, the cable TV outlet should be at the same height as the electrical outlets
- Using the carpenter's level and a pencil, lightly draw a vertical line that crosses the point where the cable enters the room. At the desired height for the top of the bracket, draw a horizontal line 2 inches long. The horizontal line should overlap the hole where the cable enters the room so that the finished receptacle will not have a hole off to the side. If the cable is located above or below the desired receptacle location, the wall will have to be patched
- With either the drywall saw or the utility knife, cut along the horizontal line. If a stud is hit before reaching the end of the 2-inch line, extend the line in the opposite direction and finish the 2-inch cut
- At each end of the top cut, draw a vertical line 3 1/2 inches down. Draw another 2-inch horizontal line across the bottom. Now make the remaining three cuts and remove the piece of drywall, leaving a 2-inch by 3 1/2-inch hole for the bracket. Break the piece of drywall away from the coax cable
- Pull the coax cable through the bracket with the clamps facing the wall. Insert the bracket into the hole. With a screwdriver, tighten the screws that hold the clamps. As the screw is turned, the clamp will rotate into a vertical position to hold the bracket against the wall
- Screw the coax connector to the jack on the rear of the wall plate and tighten. Push the coax cable back into the wall and align the plate screws with the screw holes in the bracket. Tighten the two screws and the jack is ready for use
